Mowing
Mowing your lawn at a 3 inch height allows the grass roots to be
shaded from the summer sun. This makes your grass more vigorous
and tolerant to dry conditions. This also is a way to control
broadleaf weeds. Because weeds love hot dry sunny spots to grow.
Remembering your grass roots will grow to approximately the same
height as you allow your grass to grow.
Watering
Watering your lawn is best done preferably in the cooler morning
hours. Two good 1 inch soakings per week is better than several
short shallow waterings a week. This deep soaking will allow the
water to penetrate deeper into the root system promoting deeper
root growth that will help in the hot summer months.
Mulching or Bagging
Though many people still bag their grass studies have shown it
is much healthier to mulch your grass deep into your lawn.
Mulching forms a fine layer of thatch, shading grass roots from
the hot sun and holding the moisture in the root system. To
avoid too much of a build up of thatch many of our customers
will aerate in the fall to control the thatch.
Seeding
Working up the ground approximately ¼ to ½ inch deep, planting
the grass seed and raking over the top lightly to cover the
seed. After seeding your bare spots apply a light coverage of
straw over the top to protect the seed from washing away and
shading if from the heat during the afternoon. This will also
keep the moisture in the soil for the grass seed to germinate.
Water twice daily for the first 7-10 days keeping the soil
moist. Depending on what kind of seed you buy some grasses
germinate faster than others. You should see growth in 10-14
days… keep watering. Watering may be shortened to once a day
after about 2 weeks of germination. No heavy foot traffic until
grass has established itself in 30 to 45 days. You may mow your
new grass after 30-45 days or the grass has gotten taller than
you would normally mow, (3 inches). Watering can be slowed but
keep up the deep soakings as previously discussed.
Fertilizer
Apply a slow release Fertilizer after it has been 45 days from
seeding. Follow applications directions on the bag or allow us
to do it for you. Do not apply any weed killer to your new areas
until you have mowed it at least 3 times, approximately 4 weeks.
